As the heart stroke led Sidney Raz to his diagnosis of stomach cancer

Comedian Sidney Raz had no warning signs before doctors find stomach cancer grow inside it.

The 36-year-old, best known for his “Hacks Life” viral videos, was early diagnosed, significantly improving his chances of beat the disease.

But it was not luck that led to the discovery. It was a heart attack.

Back to March, Raz – whose real name is Sidney Raskind – went to social media to share destructive news: his daughter had died in the womb in just 26 weeks due to holoprosencefaly, a rare condition where the brain fails to form properly.

After the tragedy, the Creator of Content and his wife underwent genetic testing to try to understand what had gone wrong.

As the doctors noticed anything in their genes to explain the defect, they found something else: Raz had a mutation in the CTNNA1 gene called a deletion – the same had his daughter.

“Because of that deletion, in recent years, it has been seen to cause some types of cancer – specifically stomach cancer,” divided Raz in a video on Instagram.

That red genetic flag pushed the influence to undergo an endoscopy, where doctors found gastric cancer at an early stage.

“I have not had symptoms,” Raz said in a later update. “It was literally only DNA of my daughter who saved my life, and now there can be a way forward.”

Doctors recommended removing his stomach completely. Surgery is planned for July.

“The doctor said today that if I hadn’t caught this early, I would return within three years in the third phase or four cancer,” Raz said. “So I may not have my stomach, but I will be here in three to four years.”

Are you thinking about how to eat without a stomach?

Raz destroyed it in tiktok. Surgeons will connect his esophagus directly to his intestine – so instead of food digesting in his stomach first, he will simply go “straight down”.

“I just have to chew a lot more, and recover my body on how to eat, so I can’t eat so much,” he said. “It will be a big adjustment. But I don’t want cancer.”

Stomach cancer often grows smooth, developing slowly over the years less, if there are, visible symptoms early, according to the Mayo Clinic.

When they appear, early signs may include indigestion and mild upper stomach pain.

But most people are not diagnosed until much later, when the disease has progressed and symptoms like vomiting, black stool, extreme fatigue and unexplained weight loss begin on the surface.

In the US, new stomach cancer cases have fallen by about 1.5% each year for the last decade, for American cancer society.

Traditionally, the disease has mainly affected older adults, but rates are climbing young people.

Being male, overweight or obese can increase your chances. So a high diet in salty foods, smoked or pickled and low in vegetable fruits.

Smoking an alcohol consumption are also known risk factors.

Medical conditions such as gastritis, stomach polyps and gastroesophageal reflux disease, along with a history of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, can also increase your chances.

If you are thinking about genetic testing, RAZ suggests asking doctors to check mutations in CDH1 and CTNNA1 genes.

“These are both now that we know that leads to this type of scattered stomach cancer,” he said.

In 2025, American Cancer Society estimates about 30,300 new cases of gastric cancer will be diagnosed in the US, and approximately 10,780 people will die from the disease.
