Memorial Sloan Kettering Prom celebrates children with cancer

After being diagnosed with an aggressive and rare carcinoma tumor during her sophisticated March year, 16-year-old Jazzy lost her promises.

But on Thursday afternoon, teenager Catskill had to stroll a red carpet into a ball dress with pink beads, a photo for new bestie and young patient Samantha, 15, and Boogie to “scream” and “dance queen” with her boyfriend Liam high school.

“We have to have a little our promise here,” said Jazzy, who is facing hearing loss from its chemotherapy. “We have a new family here.”

She was one of about 200 people – brought out patients, family and staff – participating in the Prom Memorial Sloan Kettering’s Pediatric, who was held in the dining room west transformed within the well -known hospital.

It was the 35th Pediatric promot, which began as a small dance party in the hospital unit and grew up in a detailed ball with ornate dresses, a photo stand, DJ, limos, a milk bar, face paint and many dances.

Despite the backdrop of the shiny “Night Night” decorations, the guests drank ginger ale and juicy and enjoyed the mac and cheese and burgers that even doctors occupied only once.

“This is everyone’s favorite day of the year,” said Melissa Seidner, a 31-year-old administrative supervisor at Pediatric Division in MSK. “It is a lot of fun to see all patients enjoy. It is a nice break from dealing with what we deal with.”

She wore a green jewel dress that she would have chosen from the shelves of clothing donated in a repeated hospital room, turned “promingdale” by the MSK Children’s Committee society.

Maggie Kraus, a 17-year-old from Westchester who was diagnosed with leukemia last November, rocked a soft purple clutch with matching head scarf while she split the afternoon.

“I love the princess’s dresses,” she said, vowing to wear her 18th birthday in July. “I was really nervous I wouldn’t be able to experience high promises. But they withdrew.”

Kraus was set to start her next round of Kimio a few hours after the promise, but she did not allow her – and nausea that was likely to bring – to get away from her pleasure for the event.

“Let me have fun,” she said.

As the song “I will survive” played in the background, competitive horses transmitted how “her whole world turned upside down” from her latest diagnosis.

Doctors told what she would not be able to ride horses for two years.

“I tried them wrong and I’m riding,” said the fearless teenager, who voluntarily work with younger children in the spectrum. “I’m very scared of the needles, but I have to get used to it.”

She shaved her flowing brown hair – which she wanted to color the bright colors – instead of expecting the side effects of chemistry to make her fall out.

“I wanted she was doing and not cancer,” she said.

Dr. Pediatric Oncologist Andrew Kung told the post that the prom illustrates the philosophy in MSK, whose center of cancer pediatrics ranks the best in the country and treats people up to 40 years of age.
