Prominent Pathologist Richard Scolyer reveals heartbroken cancer updating

The well -known expert of Melanoma and former Australian Professor of the Year Richard Scolyer has shared a heartbroken update in his battle with brain cancer – revealing that the disease is progressing again.

Professor Scrio, 58, was diagnosed with aggressive and incurable glioblastoma in 2023 and was initially given only eight months to live.

However, after undergoing experimental immunotherapy based on melanoma research, his cancer remained in the breast for 18 months.

In a social media post on Monday, Professor Scolyer confirmed a recent MRI scan had shown further tumor progress on the left side of his brain.

“While this may not be the best direction to go with my changes, for me (for me), I still find it interested in continuing to live, love and have fun when possible,” he wrote on social media.

“I feel like there are plenty of people in my team (including my family and friends) and they make me happy and proud.”

The prominent cancer researcher, jointly called Australian of the Year in 2024 together with the co-director of the Institute of Melanoma Australia, Professor Georgina Long, has remained extremely sincere and optimistic throughout his treatment.

In February, Professor SCOLYER announced that the cancer had returned, making it undergo surgery on Mars to remove as much tumor as possible.

He later explained that while the procedure successfully removed a significant portion of the mass, it remained “small tentacles” and would require additional treatment to “raise” the remaining cancer cells.

“Depending on what scanning shows … this will help in choosing which are the future forms of therapy that I may have to see where we should go from here,” he said at the time.

He also accepted the emotional and physical number of constant treatment, admitting that he had felt “slightly up and down” because of the side effects, though he continued to feed the time spent with his wife Katie and their children.

“Sometimes I’m happy to have fun, but some of the therapies have knocked on me a little, so I can’t do some of the things I want to do,” he said.

“I am still spending a fun at home with my children, they have been very kind, as well as my beautiful wife Katie has, who has used her extraordinary intellect to help me talk to different doctors about the various options that are available.”

Professor Scolyer said he expects to undergo another operation and remains hope for future treatments.

“Crossing fingers this operation are not so bad and we can move forward with the other form of therapy and hope to push things faster to try and open things for many, many patients who have received glioblastoma,” he said.
